Urine Drug Testing
ARCpoint Labs of Frisco offers fast, affordable urinalysis. If you are subject to testing through your employment or other situation, and you want to know what the results are likely to be, come in to any ARCpoint Labs of Frisco location and request one of our accurate, reliable, and above all, confidential, urinalysis drug screens. Lab based testing is the gold standard and still the most reliable and accurate method of testing. By knowing in advance what the results are likely to be you are proactive and prepared to make the best decisions possible for yourself in terms of timing for a job application or other action.
In addition to the standard 5-panel and 10-panel drug screens described below, urine testing can also be used to test for the presence or use of alcohol and nicotine in these specialized screens:
- EtG Urine Testing for Alcohol: A specialized form of urine testing for alcohol, called EtG testing, tests for the presence of ethyl glucuronide (EtG). EtG is a byproduct of alcohol when it is processed and metabolized in the liver and flushed out of the body in urine.
- Cotinine Testing for Nicotine/Tobacco Use: Cotinine is a byproduct of nicotine and can be used to determine whether or not a person is an active tobacco user, as well as whether they have stopped using tobacco products recently or are a long-term non-user.
Standard 5-Panel Urine Test
The following substances can be detected using our 5-panel urine tests:
- THC (Marijuana)
Expanded 10-Panel Urine Test
In addition to substances that can be identified by our 5-panel test, the 10-panel test is often used to determine whether prescription drugs are present. These panels offer flexibility and can be customized to your needs. An example 10-panel test might search for:
- (all substances from the 5-panel) plus
- Methaqualone *
- Propoxyphene *
*Other drugs may be substituted, such as MDMA, Oxycodone and extended opiates
NOTE: Synthetic drugs can’t be detected on 5- or 10-panel test; they require a separate urine test..
Urine Testing Procedure
When you undergo a urinalysis drug screen, you are directed to a nearby collection site, typically a private bathroom or bathroom stall. You will not be allowed to take purses or other personal items into the room or stall with you. You produce and deposit the urine specimen into a specially designed secure cup. The technician receives it from you. The may perform initial testing immediately on site or seal the specimen with tamper-resistant tape, typically in your presence, and package it for transport to the lab for testing.
The initial drug test is done using a process called immunoassay. An immunoassay test contains antibodies to the specific drugs (antigens) being tested. If any of those substances are present, the antibody will bind with the antigen. The test is designed so that the chemical reaction in the sample causes it to change color, and the color is compared with known benchmarks to determine whether the test qualifies as negative or non-negative.
A non-negative result automatically triggers a second test of a sample from the same specimen. The second test is by a different and more specific process, called gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, or GC/MS. GC/MS is a two-stage process that vaporizes a small amount of the sample into gas so that it can be separated into its distinct chemical components and specifically identified. GC/MS testing is considered the gold standard in forensic chemical testing.
Many employers, such as the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) and agencies and contractors that must abide by its rules, take a “split specimen.” At the time of collection the sample is separated into two vials. The first is tested immediately according to regular procedures described above. The second belongs to the sample donor and is available for secondary testing if they don’t agree with the initial test results.
If the technician administering the test has reason to suspect that you have tried to tamper with the test results in some way, either by dilution, adulteration o substitution, they can request that you produce another specimen that you do so under direct observation.
